Seagate’s recent quarterly results were a tale of success, with the company reporting strong revenue and earnings beat. The company’s gross margin of 52.7% was well above expectations, with operating EPS of $5.71 exceeding both GS and the Street’s projections. By end market, Data Center revenue of $2.93 billion was above GS and the Street’s projections, while Edge IoT revenue of $697 million was also a highlight. Seagate guided 1Q well above the Street with revenue expected to be around $4.1 billion at the midpoint, which is significantly higher than GS and the Street’s projections. Operating EPS guidance of $7.30 is far above GS and the Street’s projections, with an operating margin of approximately 50%.

On the other hand, SK Hynix’s second-quarter operating profit missed analysts’ estimates, fueling concerns that the AI-driven chip boom may be moderating. Despite this, the company reaffirmed plans to spend in the high-40 trillion-won range on capital expenditures this year, citing robust demand from major technology companies building AI data centers. Management pushed back against concerns over an AI spending slowdown, saying customer demand remains “explosive.” While second-quarter results were weighed down by changes in the DRAM product mix, SK Hynix struck an upbeat tone on memory pricing for the second half. The company said pricing would remain strong in the near term.

The contrast between Seagate and SK Hynix’s earnings highlights the diversity of the semiconductor industry and the different factors that can impact a company’s performance. While Seagate benefited from strong demand for its data center and IoT products, SK Hynix faced challenges in the DRAM market. However, both companies remain optimistic about the future, with Seagate guiding for continued growth in the second half and SK Hynix expecting robust demand from major technology companies building AI data centers.
