Alibaba Group Holding Ltd has unveiled a new AI chip called the Zhenwu V900, which it claims is China’s most powerful and can be combined in clusters of up to 500,000 units to power frontier-model training. The company’s CEO, Eddie Wu, has announced plans to intensify investment in AI hardware and infrastructure as the company pursues artificial general intelligence. Additionally, Wu has set a target of developing models with between 5 and 10 trillion parameters, far larger than what’s common today, for longer and more complex tasks.

Meanwhile, SK Hynix (Hynix) hosted a virtual group meeting with investors on September 22, where the key takeaways included a positive view on near-term pricing growth and next year HBM pricing growth, as well as a focus on technology migration given limited clean room space to add meaningful wafer capacity. The company reiterated its positive view on long-term average (LTA) growth and planning for further rounds of shareholder return updates.

Overall, these developments highlight the growing importance of AI and semiconductor technology in the global market, with companies like Alibaba and Hynix at the forefront of this trend. As the race to develop and implement advanced AI technologies continues, it will be interesting to see how these companies fare in the coming years.
